I love this tip! I often find myself trying to work story things out while I go about the more mundane tasks of my day, I love that you have a phrase to describe that. Also that flower is to friggen die for.
Thank you for sharing. This is just what I needed to hear today. I’ve been struggling with the outline of my novel revision. Stuck halfway through, struggling to just sit at the computer and finish it.
When I get stuck, I like to answer the question "What do I already know about this?" The more intentional I am at answering that question the more stuff I'll think of to add as part of the answer.
I know the dwarves group things in twelves. Twelve mountain ranges, twelve cities, twelve fortresses, twelve thanes, twelve mines, twelve precious stones, twelve noble houses, twice-twelve gods. Once I know that, I can start making lists and drawing connections.
Why twelve? I don't know. Maybe the dwarves have six fingers and toes. What about the other races? Maybe elves use three. Maybe orcs use seven. Humans probably use five.
The absolute most important part of this process is to go with my immediate gut instinct answer. Don't think, just answer.
